Free Business Web Hosting Questions asked

Resolved Question: Conservatives.......Have you ever heard of this "high profile pundit" before?

Hugh Hewitt?? This is a first for me. Also, it is pretty clear to see how MSNBC has twisted this story. They mention Rush Limbaugh, who has never called for a boycott of GM. --------------------------------------------------------- GM bailout triggers calls for boycott Conservative commentators stoke anger against 'Government Motors' A sizable share of Americans, recent surveys show, are reluctant to buy from a bankrupt automaker. Complicating matters, the bailout is triggering a harsh reaction from the conservative end of the political spectrum, with some high-profile pundits calling for an outright boycott of what many are calling “Government Motors.” Among the most vocal is Hugh Hewitt, who has frequently called for a boycott to protest the “Obamaization of the American car business,” both on his syndicated radio show and on his blog. Hewitt insists that “individual Americans” must resist buying the automaker’s products because, as he wrote in one blog entry, “every dollar spent with GM is a dollar spent against free enterprise.” Powerful radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh also has been associated with the movement but said he has not encouraged any boycott. "I think it is media childishness when people start urging boycotts," he said on his show this month, according to a transcript posted on his Web site. He did say he has heard from listeners who do not intend to buy another GM or Chrysler car. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31546668/ns/business-autosJDM** I agree with you 100%. We own all GM products and my husband is a loyal customer. We were not happy to see the government take control. Sad. more

Voting Question: is this a fair price for making websites?

I am starting my own web design business and have come up with my first price so please tell me if it sounds reasonable enough. 350.00 pounds for a 5 page website including free GRAPHIC DESIGN WORK! contact forms, calanders, photo gallery, web marketing, SEO, free updating and content, hosting. And then i will be charging 100 pounds a year to maintain the website. So basically its a one of payment of 350 pounds and then 100 pounds a year. How does this sound? more

Resolved Question: Publishing to the web. Should I go with an HD or SD camera?

Will be making dozens, maybe hundreds of short teaching videos (5-10 minutes long) and uploading them to various free video sites as well as my own webpage. Do not want to pay ridiculous amounts of money on hosting costs, though. Is HD overkill? Or a good choice for a fledgling e-learning business? more

Resolved Question: How much would you pay for...?

...a site to house your web design, art, or business portfolio & resume? I'm not talking one of those cheesy "drag-and-drop-your-crud" sites, I mean an actual folder to put all of your own .html, .css, .pdf, .php, etc files in... ALSO, if you don't have those files (the actual site, resume, etc) but you DO have design-ideas (.psd, .jpg, etc) for your portfolio site, how much would you pay the hosting site to make the designs "come to life" as a website for your portfolio? ((Please no random rude remarks, just give me a general guesstimate of what you think people would pay for a service like that, I'm fully aware that there are lots of free "do-it-yourself" sites out there, but I'm trying to make a name for this part of my site as specifically for awesome creative digital portfolios))The idea of this is that you just give a potential employer a link instead of a billion gigs of file attachments, lol... more

Voting Question: Is Yahoo Small Business a good domain host?

I have been using geocities for the longest. And now that they are closing, I know no better free web host. Anything that sets it apart from the others? If you know any better host, please let me know and please leave a review if you can. As well as one for Yahoo Small Business. more

Resolved Question: Bad Business on My Part?

***Note*** I posted this in another category too, so I hope I don't get in trouble but I really need the opinions of people that read and answer in this category too. ***End Note*** OK... I design websites. I do not sell templates. As a matter of fact it is all over my website that I do not do templates, ever. But a little over a year ago a new client came along and said he was looking for a template. He said he wanted a website built that looked cool and that he would update it. I never told him I would give him a template, as a matter of fact I told him that he seemed like a busy guy and that I would be there to do the updating of his site for him. So what I offered him (verbatim) is: ********* $365 Includes: 5-7 page site designed and implemented Hosting if needed Up to 100 Email Addresses (if hosting with me) Flash Design (2 max) Logo Design and / or Manipulation Contact form on site (PHP) Free Updates for the existing content of the site (once site is designed and implemented) 1 Year - 24/7 Support (just email or call me anytime for any reason) Submission of your URL to over 200 Search Engines quarterly After one year, if you like to continue my services I just invoice you an additional $365 on the 1 year anniversary date. ********** Now... The anniversary date has passed. I sent 3 invoices to the email address of the guy that started this agreement. I sent a 30 day notice, a 7 day notice and a 1 day notice. There was no reply to any of them. I waited 10 days after the account was due to be renewed because that is what I say I will do in my Terms Of Service. And on this 10th day I filed a DMCA (copyright infringement) with the company that is hosting his site. I did this because, again, I do not do templates. And in my TOS it says: ********** All web site designs developed by and implemented by <my real name here> will remain the Intellectual Property of <my real name here> and domain names purchased by <my real name here> will not be transferred to the Customer if at any time either <my real name here> or the Customer cancel the Customers account, or the Customer violates any credit terms or other terms associated with this agreement and or their account. ********** and ********** Any artwork, images, or text supplied by and / or designed by <my real name here> on behalf of the customer and / or for use on the clients website, will remain the property of <my real name here>. ********** Among other things. I do not sell templates, I sell a service. If someone thinks they bought my designs, I'm sorry, but they didn't, and I have gone out of my way to make this clear. Anyway, today I get a call from someone else that works at the place I did the site for, actually the owner. He tells me that the person I was working with is no longer with his company, and the whole time he thought what they purchased was a template. I explained to him what I just explained here and I told him that I would sell him the design outright and royalty free for $99. He talked me down to $75. Which is cool. I just don't like my work out there, and people hacking it up and making it look bad which makes me look bad, which is one reason why I hold the rights to my work. The other reason is, since I don't do templates and every site is designed from scratch there is much more work involved, and if someone is done with their site, moves on to another company or whatever, then I am free to take that design with me and sell it to someone else who may have similar needs. I have been doing webs now for over 10 years, and this is honestly the very first time I have been in this situation. I kinda feel like a jerk, and although I had no intention of misleading anyone it appears that there was some confusion. But all in all I think the offer of buying my design for only $75 is a sweet offer to resolve the situation. Am I being a jerk? And if I am, do you think it's justified? Let me know, I really want as many opinions as possible. ThanksOh, and yesterday I emailed him a payment link for the $75 and he still has not paid. more

Resolved Question: I need Help putting a template on my Yahoo Small Business website.?

I have purchased a template. I have a website using Yahoo small business. I am trying to figure out how to put this template on to my site. I really need help. I am familiar with HTML but not CSS and it uses alot of CSS. Here are the instructions it gives me: BASIC TEMPLATE INSTRUCTIONS Before getting started you should always duplicate this folder in another location, in order to refer back to original documents when needed. In order to use the same fonts as the sample file you will need to copy and paste the fonts located in your FONTS folder, into your fonts’ folder on your computer. Location Of folder: My Computer/WINDOWS/fonts Refer to the style.css file (located inside the SITE folder, folder name: styles] along with the html web pages) when needing to modify your text, colors, and some background images and colors. View your source code to identify which items you want to modify. This web template is designed in advanced cascading style sheets format. In order to work with this template you will need some understanding of how to use cascading style sheets. To learn more go to http://www.w3schools.com/css/default.asp. THERE ARE 2 VERSIONS OF LAYOUT DESIGN TO CHOOSE FROM. All web template files for the table-based site are located in the folder named “TABLE BASED SITE”. All web template files for the CSS site are located in the folder named “CSS TABLELESS SITE”. To modify your Business Logo, open the image called “logo-header.psd”, located in your SLICED PSD FILES folder. To do this you will need Adobe Photoshop- or any other software program that handles PSD files. While modifying your logo/header image you may find it easier to embed your “service times/join us” information with it. If you do this, simply delete the current “join us” text/css info from each page. Remember to save the file, in the appropriate format(jpg or gif), to the images folder. Also, be sure that your HTML code reflects your re-named image(s). The same applies to all the images that are modifiable in the SLICED PSD FILES folder. Alternatively, if you do not have Adobe Photoshop you can download a free software program called GIMP (http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-sharp/) that works similarly to Adobe Photoshop. Another option, if you have difficulty editing your images, is to use the blank images provided inside the blank-extra images folder found in the main directory. ALSO NOTE: There are blank images that can be used in any type of graphic editor inside the folder named “blank images”. All sample text has been left in the template for you to highlight and simply replace with your own text. Again, to modify any of the font colors, sizes, etc, refer to the style.css file (found inside the “styles” folder). For Dreamweaver user’s wanting to edit the content within a scrolling div tag, simply select the outer layer and then double-click. The layer will then expand and you will be able to edit your text without going into the code view. A text navigation bar sample page (nav-sample.html) and css has also been provided for those who find it challenging to change the graphic button images. Please be sure the entire SITE folder is uploaded to your server, including: images folder, styles folder, and all html pages. Our templates do not include any additional scripts. All forms such as search fields, newsletter subscription, or contact information are inactive. By definition, these forms are dynamic functions that require customized setup between the end user and his or her server/host company.  ANYONE CAN HELP? PLEASE! more

Voting Question: What is the best free internet host for simple personal web pages?

I'd like to get a web page to promote my business, but I don't want to pay for a separate domain. I'm leaning towards Geocities or maybe freewebs, but I would like more input. Resolved Question: How much should I charge to make a website for a friend?

Hello, YAY! I got my first web design project. This is for a friend, and I dont intend to charge full price, but frankly I dont know what to charge. Basically this friend is a Psychologist and the project sounds easy. Basically a 5-page site - a simple template, and she will provide the text. She wants me to register the URL, get the hosting set up, and put the site together. I have my own reseller account so basically the hosting will be free for her -or I can charge a nominal fee. build it into the cost. I dont know if I should charge her a hourly rate or just one flat price for everything, but the entire site should probably take a day to do. I figure that I want to do a few of these to build up my portfolio and go from there. And since she is a friend, my thinking is that I wont gouge her with the price or anything. But I really dont know what would be a fair price. What do you suggest? She has another friend who is talking about getting a website and her husband also has a small business but no site.. So this could be the beginning of something.. Oh another question. How much space should I allot for a site like this? I was thinking 100 MB is more than enough. 5 web pages using the same template - some photos - maybe one flash animation - but that is it.. Thanks much more

Resolved Question: Need Help Hosting a Podcast?

Ok, Here's the deal! I admin my church's website. We have a Yahoo Small Business site. I have all of the audio sermons available online from our web page, but I basically just link them from one of the pages for download. What I'd like to do it make the sermons a Pod cast that I can archive and publish to places like iTunes. Yahoo doesn't have anything like that to help me with so can anyone recommend a site (preferable for free) that I can either host or create a pod cast with? Thanks in advance!  more

Resolved Question: Looking for a free Web Host?

Ok so I finally broke down and bought the two dollar domain name from Yahoo small business today... of course they don't tell you that they wont let you edit your own html and you have to use there templates. (unless you pay 12 bucks a month indefinitely) Luckily they let you do a "domain redirect" meaning you host somewhere else and redirect people to that domain name... I guess? Basically what I need is a place to dump my html that will host it. I built it using all external stuff- widgets attached to blogs & Flickr/ images through embedded photobucket links, basically what I'm saying is it doesn't have any files that need to be included with it- just the html. Is there a place that will host a site of small size where they will just let me dump my html and not give me all this template and runaround crap?  more
